Judicial Accountability – Michigan Probate Court
Disclaimer: The following post summarizes allegations reported by the 7 Investigators (WXYZ) and statements from public officials. Michigan’s court system is facing another serious controversy.
According to an investigative report, Judge Kathleen Ryan, a long-time Oakland County probate judge who makes life-altering decisions for families and people with disabilities, is accused of:
• Making racist and derogatory remarks (recorded by a senior court administrator)
• Using homophobic slurs and discussing explicit personal matters with staff
• Allegedly harassing a high-ranking court official for years
Chief Probate Judge Linda Hallmark removed Ryan from her docket after these recordings were shared with the Michigan Supreme Court and county leaders. The Judicial Tenure Commission will decide whether to open a formal investigation.
Why it matters: Judges hold enormous power over families, estates, and guardianships. Allegations like these raise urgent questions about oversight, accountability, and bias inside our courts.
Should states adopt stronger systems to monitor judges’ conduct and protect people in their courtrooms?
